The Civil Supplies
Department was functioning as Hyderabad Commercial Corporation
in the erstwhile Hyderabad State from 1946 to 1952. In 1952, the
Civil Supplies Department was created and later on, it became
part of the Board of Revenue, a Member of which was designated
as Commissioner of Civil Supplies. The nomenclature of the
Department was "Board of Revenue (Civil Supplies)". With the
abolition of the Board of Revenue in 1977, the Civil Supplies
Department gained separate entity and the Commissioner of Civil
Supplies became the Head of the Department and also given the Ex.Officio status as Secretary in the then Food & Agriculture

Originally,
the Department was only a regulatory Department.
Subsequently, its activities have been diversified to
include procurement of food grains under Minimum Support
Price (MSP) operations, rice distribution under subsidized
rice scheme, consumer affairs, price monitoring,
distribution of LPG connections to BPL women (Deepam Scheme)
etc.
The
Commissioner of Civil Supplies is also the Ex - Officio
Secretary to Government in the Consumer Affairs, Food and
Civil Supplies Department.
Functions of Commissioner of Civil Supplies.

Procurement
of Paddy, coarse grains like maize, jowar, bajra, pulsesat
MSP through the State agencies and FCI under MSP
operations.

Procurement of rice under mill levy for central pool by
FCI.
- Public
Distribution of essential commodities through fair price
shops.

Implementation of LPG connections for BPL families (
Deepam ) Scheme.

Monitoring of prices of essential commodities and Market
Intervention Operations for controlling the open market
prices, if need arises.

Implementation of Consumer Protection Act through State
Commission and District Consumer Fora and other Consumer
welfare Schemes.

Implementation of Packaged Commodities Rules and MRP
and ensuring correct measures and weights through
verification and stamping by Legal Metrology Department.

Implementation of Petroleum
Products and other Control Orders under the Essential
Commodities Act, 1955.
